Maths at Park Wood Schools Federation
Here at Park Wood, Year 1 to Year 6 use and supplement the Maths No Problem approach to teaching Maths. Our Foundation Stage children follow a similar approach to that outlined below, but they are ultimately working towards meeting the Early Learning Goals set out by the Government.
As recommended by the leading educators in Singapore, we take children on a journey of three stages for each area on Maths. First, the children explore new learning using concrete learning experiences through the use of manipulatives. This if followed by the same concept being tackled using pictorial representations. Once the children are secure in the fundamentals of each concept, they are then expected use a more abstract approach to their learning. Using the Maths No Problem guidance also allows us to move children forward at broadly the same pace as suggested by the National Curriculum. Those who find some areas of Maths a challenge are offered more opportunities to practice their skills using varied fluency with the support of manipulatives as and when needed. On the other hand, some children need more of a challenge. This is achieved through allowing the children to broaden their understanding through mastery challenges.
The following links will give you a more in-depth insight into the Singapore approach.
Below you will find an overview of the curriculum for each year group.
*Year 6 are currently trialing the White Rose Hub approach as recommended by Medway advisors and NCETM.
*Some children requiring specific interventions use Numicon and teaching approaches are tailored quite specifically to children's needs.
